Teaching award recognition for education alumni

A reception teacher at Castleway primary school, Wirral, has been named Male Teacher of the Year in the National Early Years Teacher of the Year Awards, following nominations from colleagues and families of the children he teaches.

The Liverpool Hope alumni studied Drama, Theatre & and Education studies before returning to campus a decade later to complete a PGCE, working towards becoming a qualified teacher.

Simon said: “I knew that I wanted to return to education to do a PGCE programme and so I spent many years working towards gaining additional qualifications to allow me to pursue that option, undertaking night school classes and really put everything I had into it. Having studied at Hope previously and knowing the campus, it was an easy choice for me to return. There was no better place for me.

“I undertook my placement at Castleway whilst studying and loved the school. I was kept on here and I’m now coming up to two years teaching. The placements really do set you up for a career in teaching and give you real-life experience next to that grounding in research. It’s so important to have that network of early careers teachers (ECTs) to share experiences and knowledge with.”

On his career and recent award recognition, Simon comments that the hard work is worth the reward. “This has been a huge confidence boost for me. I’m still early into my teaching career and sometimes doubt myself but this has really reaffirmed why I love my job. I would tell anyone studying and training to become a teacher that it is very challenging but go for it. Don’t give up and use your network.”

The school, based in Leasowe, works closely with Liverpool Hope University to facilitate teacher placements, with past and present students currently working there.

Liverpool Hope and Castleway School are proud of Simon’s achievements, with Headteacher Mr Stuart Mycroft saying: “Simon embodies everything that the school stands for. He is a wonderful person and the children and their families have such fantastic things to say about him. We have worked with Simon since he was a student and he made an impact right from the beginning. This award is really a testament to Simon and the work he puts in and demonstrates his capability as a strong, confident teacher.”

Nominations came from colleagues and families, who praised Simon for his natural, nurturing approach, instilling confidence and inspiring children to be themselves. They comment on the impact of his lessons and the welcoming atmosphere that he creates within the classroom.

Congratulations to Simon Smith on this achievement.
