Amazing support and inspiring lecturers: Why students love studying at Hope

Liverpool Hope University has some of the most satisfied students in the UK.

That’s the verdict of Times Higher Education, who ranked us fifth for student satisfaction following an excellent set of results in the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS).

The NSS asks final-year undergraduates to share their thoughts on their university experience and, in the latest edition, Liverpool Hope was also rated top in the North West for academic support, mental wellbeing services and learning opportunities.

But what is it that makes studying at Hope so special? We spoke to students and graduates to find out.

Beautiful campuses

For second-year Early Childhood student, Katie Dodds, it’s the picturesque Hope Park campus.

Hailing from Portadown, Northern Ireland, the 19-year-old enjoys the suburban location in leafy Childwall, only a short bus ride from Liverpool city centre.

“I love being on campus,” she said. “It is such a beautiful campus. I’m not from a big city and with Hope being outside of the city centre I feel like I get the best of both worlds.

“I’m only 20 minutes from the city centre experience, but the campus is in a quieter location which is what I’m used to back home.”

Inspiring lecturers

Liverpool Hope prides itself on its personal approach to education, prioritising small-group teaching which allows students to work closely with tutors.

That proved invaluable for Fine Art graduate, Assanato Embalo, who immersed herself in university life, taking on the roles of student ambassador and student content creator for Hope’s social media channels.

It meant she benefited from a broad university experience which developed skills inside and outside of the classroom, but it is the passion of her lecturers that she remembers most fondly.

She said: “My tutors went above and beyond to help me.

“If I was facing a challenge with an essay or preparing for an exam, they would always offer a helping hand. I was truly inspired by their enthusiasm and passion.

“My time at Hope is one I'll always remember and speak about in years to come. Not only did I meet the most beautiful people, but I also got the chance to study a subject I thoroughly enjoyed, working closely with my tutors to gain first-hand experience of being a professional artist.”

A supportive community

Creating a supportive environment where every student can thrive is central to the university experience at Liverpool Hope.

There is a real focus on getting to know students as individuals so they can develop the skills they need to get where they want to go in life and for Creative Writing and Psychology graduate, Cydney Warrington, this tailored approach sets Hope apart.

She said: “Going to Liverpool Hope was the best choice I ever made.

“I felt so supported. People say you’re a name not a number at Hope and it really is true because you don’t get swept up by a big cohort [of students]. You get a personal experience and a sense of community.

Childhood & Youth and Sport & PE graduate Toni Carr, echoes these sentiments, adding: “You receive unconditional support from staff. There is always someone to help you and Hope always finds a solution to any challenges you may be facing.

“The support I have received over the last few years has not only helped me to achieve new goals academically but personally as well.”
