Two Liverpool Hope lecturers were invited to speak on BBC Radio Merseyside this week.

Lecturer in Childhood and Youth Dr Emma Katz featured on the station’s afternoon drive time show discussing the Government’s consultation on its new proposed Domestic Abuse Bill.

Asked by Presenter Paul Salt to clarify the proposals, Dr Katz described them an ‘upgrade of the tools we already have’ to deal with perpetrators. The measures include perpetrators being electronically tagged, while extending the definition of domestic abuse to include economic aspects of abuse such as withholding money.

Dr Katz identified the value of tagging in particular, stating the monitoring of perpetrators’ whereabouts ‘can lift some of the burden of the victim to hide themselves away from the perpetrator, or sometimes leave their families and jobs in order to “go on the run” from the abuse – that is such an injustice and has got to be changed’.

Elsewhere, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy Dr Steven Shakespeare discussed the late Stephen Hawking on BBC Radio Merseyside’s Daybreak show.

Dr Shakespeare discussed how the scientific insights of Stephen Hawking challenge and fuel the debate around faith.

He discussed how science and religion work alongside each other, and how the two can complement each other.
