The Creative Campus will host the official launch of the international LEAP Dance Festival 2018.
Merseyside Dance Initiative (MDI) and the School of Creative and Performing Arts’ dance team will present a two-day conference to open the international festival.
‘Our Dance Democracy: Dance, Performance, Culture and Civic Democracy’ will take place at the Creative Campus from Friday 2nd – Saturday 3rd November.
Dr Rachel Sweeney, Senior Lecturer and Co-course Leader in Dance, said: “Focusing on the strengths of this discipline within the School of Creative and Performing Arts, the conference forefronts dance as a socially engaged and ethical practice that might confront the topic of democracy and civic responsibility through arts and academia.”
The event will also explore what it means to be democratic in an ever-changing 21st century, for both artists, academics and the wider community. The conference supports the theme of LEAP 2018, which celebrates female artists and the power for transformation in contributing to dance practice and its engagement in communities.
As the festival’s main partner, Liverpool Hope University will host a variety of performances at the Creative Campus’ Capstone Theatre between Friday 2nd and Saturday 10th November. Each performance will feature a female protagonist, in order to celebrate the themes of suffrage and mark 100 years since women won the right to vote.
