The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden, hosted a special tour of the Town Hall for MA History students.

Dr Sonja Tiernan and Dr John Appleby accompanied the students on a behind the scenes discovery of the hall’s impressive history.

Students were shown the hall of remembrance, dedicated to the thousands of Liverpool men who died fighting during the First World War and the council chambers, which house plaques recording each Mayor of Liverpool since the 13th century.

Dr Tiernan said: “The Lord Mayor and her husband Roy Gladden were very generous with their time and gave a welcoming tea reception in the Lady Mayoress' Parlour. The tour highlighted how the Town Hall has played a central role in Liverpool's evolving history.”

One of the highlights of the day involved students standing on the same balcony where The Beatles wowed fans at their civic reception in 1964, and where the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh waved to waiting Liverpool crowds.
