Associate Professor in History Bryce Evans addressed a commemorative conference to mark 20 years since the ratification of the Good Friday Agreement, hosted by the European Movement and held at The Athenaeum.
The event - ‘Shining Light on Ireland and Brexit’ - was launched by the Lord Mayor of Liverpool Malcolm Kennedy.
Dr Evans spoke about Britain and Ireland’s initial application to join the European Economic Community in the 1960s. Co-speakers included MPs Louise Ellman, Maria Eagle, and Alison McGovern, Irish Senator Frank Feighan, and Director General of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce John McGrane.
The conference was convened as both a celebration of the Northern Irish peace agreement and to highlight the role the EU plays in being an independent arbiter of peace.
