Safeguarding and Prevent
Liverpool Hope University are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where all members of our community can study, work, and thrive free from harm, abuse, neglect, or exploitation. We take our legal and moral responsibilities for Safeguarding and Prevent extremely seriously.
What is Safeguarding?
Safeguarding is the action taken to promote the welfare of children and adults-at-risk and to protect them from harm. Within Higher Education, this primarily focuses on the protection of students and staff who may be vulnerable, in addition to those we may come into contact with as part of studies, work or personal lives.
Our Commitment:
- Protecting Individuals: We are dedicated to protecting any student or staff
member who may be vulnerable to abuse, neglect, or exploitation. - Creating a Safe Environment: We ensure our policies, procedures, and
facilities minimize the risk of harm occurring. - Effective Response: We have clear procedures for reporting concerns and
ensuring appropriate, timely action is taken
Reporting a Concern
If you have a concern about a student or member of staff's welfare, or if you believe they may be at risk of harm, neglect, or radicalisation, it is vital to report it immediately. Also, if you become aware of information that suggests anyone outside of the University community is at risk of harm, neglect or radicalisation this too must be reported.
Note: If you are unsure who to contact, always contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or your local Designated Safeguarding Contact (DSC) who will ensure the concern is routed and managed correctly.
What is Prevent?
The Prevent Duty is a legal requirement under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015. It requires specified authorities, including universities, to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism.
Liverpool Hope and Prevent
The University fulfils its obligations through providing appropriate training on radicalisation and risk factors, maintaining appropriate Prevent risk assessments and also through adherence to annual reporting obligations with the Office for Students (OfS). University Council has overall responsibility for institutional adherence to the Prevent Duty and an Annual Report is provided to the Body by the Head of Governance.
Our implementation of the Prevent Duty is balanced with our duty to protect freedom of speech and academic freedom, within the law. Open debate is essential to the university experience.
If you have any questions about Liverpool Hope’s Approach to Prevent then you are welcome to contact the University Prevent Duty Lead.
Concerns over students or colleagues
Staff or students are encouraged to report any concerns they may have by discussing these with the University Prevent Duty Lead James Leyshon leyshoj@hope.ac.uk.
If you have been affected by a terrorist incident, you should contact Student Life studentlife@hope.ac.uk who will be able to provide support.
You can also report a concern using our online form.
