Applications are invited for two Research Assistants (1 post – 17.5 hours per week, 1 post – 14 hours per week) to work within the School of Psychology at Liverpool Hope University on a project funded by the Nuffield Foundation evaluating the Love to Read programme.

This is a research-informed intervention designed to increase reading motivation and engagement among primary school children aged 8–11.

The project is a large-scale randomised controlled trial involving a minimum of 20 primary schools across London and Liverpool. Pupils will be randomly allocated to either receive the intervention or act as a control group over a 12-week period. The evaluation will examine whether, in what contexts, and for whom the Love to Read programme is effective.

The research will involve the collection and management of quantitative questionnaire data in school settings, alongside monitoring programme implementation and treatment fidelity. There will also be opportunities to contribute to qualitative data collection, including teacher interviews, as well as transcription and analysis.

We are seeking to appoint highly motivated and proactive individuals with a degree in psychology, education, or a related discipline. The successful candidates will have experience of conducting research in applied settings and working with quantitative and/or qualitative data. Experience of working in school environments is desirable.

The project is led by Dr Miriam McBreen (UCL), in collaboration with Dr Jamie Lingwood (Liverpool Hope University) and Professor Sarah McGeown (University of Edinburgh).

Enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr Jamie Lingwood - lingwoj@hope.ac.uk

These posts start 1st September 2026 and are fixed term until 31st August 2027.
