Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is an extra layer of security for your Liverpool Hope account.

It helps keep out anyone who shouldn’t have access to your account by requiring you to verify access to a trusted device after you enter your password. Because Multi-Factor Authentication requires both something you know and something you have, it’s much harder for hackers to gain access. This way, even if your password is stolen, a hacker won’t be able to sign in to your account without the physical device.

Why is MFA required?

Cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and passwords alone are no longer enough to protect against them. Here’s why MFA is critical:

  • Stronger Protection Against Phishing

Even if your password is compromised through phishing or other means, MFA ensures that unauthorised access is prevented by requiring a second layer of verification.

  • Reduced Risk of Credential Theft

Cybercriminals often target weak, reused, or stolen passwords. MFA makes it far harder for criminals to exploit compromised credentials.

  • Compliance with Security Standards

MFA aligns with industry best practices and helps us meet legal obligations (e.g., GDPR) for securing sensitive data.

  • Protecting Your Privacy

MFA not only secures University data but also protects your personal files and emails linked to your Liverpool Hope account.

  • Preventing Account Misuse

If an account is compromised, it can be used to spread malware or attack other systems. MFA significantly reduces this risk.

Microsoft Authenticator app

You will need to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smartphone. Using the Microsoft Authenticator app with push notifications is far more secure than Email, SMS or voice-based methods of MFA which can be vulnerable to interception and SIM-swapping attacks.

Setting Up MFA

You will need to setup MFA for both your Liverpool Hope Microsoft and Google accounts.

Please download the setup guides for Microsoft and Google MFA from the IT Services User Guides page, and follow the instructions to complete the process.

Opt-Out Exceptions

If you are unable to use the Microsoft Authenticator app (e.g., no smartphone access), you may request an exception to use alternative methods like SMS or voice-based verification. Please note:

  • Exceptions must be formally requested and approved by IT Services.
  • Users with exceptions will need to acknowledge the additional risks associated with less secure methods.
  • Exceptions will be subject to periodic review, and users will be encouraged to transition to the authenticator app where feasible.
  • The exception form can be downloaded from the IT Services Policies and Forms.
