About the course

If you’re interested in understanding how children and young people grow, learn and experience the world, Childhood Studies BA (Hons) gives you the knowledge and skills to make a positive difference.

You’ll explore topics including child development, play, learning, education, health and wellbeing, children’s rights and social inequality, considering how these shape childhood in the UK and around the world.

You’ll study childhood from different perspectives, including developmental psychology, sociology, politics, history and social policy. This multidisciplinary approach will help you understand the social, cultural and political factors that influence children and young people’s lives. You’ll also develop practical research, critical thinking and communication skills that are valuable for your future career.

Learning goes beyond the classroom. Guest speakers, field visits and opportunities to connect with Liverpool’s community organisations will help you see how what you learn applies to real-world issues. You’ll be supported by a research-informed and practice-experienced academic team, with small-group teaching and dedicated academic guidance helping you build confidence throughout your degree.

Careers

A Childhood Studies degree can lead to a wide range of careers working with babies, children, young people and families and carers. You’ll graduate with transferable skills in communication, teamwork, research, critical thinking and problem-solving, alongside a strong understanding of childhood and young people’s experiences.

These skills can support careers in childcare and early years, education, youth and community work, health, social care, local government, housing and the voluntary and charity sectors. The course also helps you develop the confidence and professional awareness needed to work effectively with children, young people and families.

If you want to continue your education, Childhood Studies BA (Hons) provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study and professional training. Graduates can progress to qualifications in areas such as Primary or Early Years Teaching, Social Work and other child-focused professions, or undertake Master's-level study in Early Childhood, Education and related disciplines.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year are £9,790 for full-time undergraduate courses.*

If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £9,790.

The tuition fees for the 2027/28 academic year will be £10,050 for full-time undergraduate courses.*

If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £10,050

The University reserves the right to increase Home and EU Undergraduate and PGCE tuition fees in line with any inflationary or other increase authorised by the Secretary of State for future years of study.

Home students (UK)

*Tuition fees are subject to inflation-linked increases in line with government policy. Updated fees will be confirmed in line with the maximum fee cap set by the Government or the Office for Students (OfS) for each academic year. This means your fee may increase for each academic year of study, but only up to the maximum amount permitted for that year.

Eligible UK students can apply to the Government for a tuition loan, which is paid direct to the University. This has a low interest-rate which is charged from the time the first part of the loan is paid to the University until you have repaid it.
