Digital Humanities and Culture Research Group
Liverpool Hope University’s Digital Humanities and Culture Research Group exists as a forum across the Faculty of Creative Arts and Humanities, and the wider university, to promote, facilitate and support disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in the humanities and creative arts which utilises cutting-edge digital methodologies and critically engages with digital culture and its impact on society.
The Digital Humanities and Culture Research Group brings together staff and students who undertake, or are interested in undertaking, research that incorporates digital methodologies and/or explores the cultural, social, political and creative implications of digital technologies. These methodologies include, but are not limited to, geographical information systems (GIS), social network analysis, corpus linguistics, text encoding, data visualisation, digital archiving, creative coding and large language models.
The Group aims to:
1. Develop strong research proposals capable of attracting external funding from national and/or international funding bodies.
2. Enable new forms of research that would be difficult using traditional methods alone.
3. Support teaching and postgraduate training to equip students with the digital skills they need for employment and further education.
4. Enhance the reputation of Liverpool Hope University through collaboration and Knowledge Exchange with partners outside the university.
5. Promote critical engagement with digital culture, exploring the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies and contributing to wider debates about technology, creativity, culture and society.
We will foster a positive research environment to support these aims by:
1. Consulting with staff and students (especially postgraduate research students) to identify priorities for future activities.
2. Holding regular seminars featuring local, national and international experts across a range of Digital Humanities and Digital Culture topics.
3. Engaging with current debates in the Digital Humanities and related fields through a monthly reading group.
4. Hosting regular ‘work-in-progress’ sessions for staff and students at Liverpool Hope University to discuss their current research, acting as a testing ground for ideas prior to grant applications, conferences and publication.
5. Using digital platforms to make our research widely accessible outside the academy.
6. Encouraging collaboration between researchers whose work engages with digital methodologies, digital culture and emerging technologies.
