The Leaders Club Awards

Liverpool Hope University and The Leaders Club recognise individuals who make a significant difference to the Liverpool City Region by demonstrating excellent leadership skills and/or promoting excellence in leadership in others.

Judges looked at entries across six categories:

• Arts
• Common Good
• Enterprise
• Health and Social Care
• Education
• Uniformed Services

In each category, the judges looked at individuals that demonstrate some or all of the following leadership values, traits and qualities:

• Honesty
• Integrity
• Courage
• Empathy
• Competency
• Communication
• Co-operation
• Impact

The 2019 winners


Claire Benjamin, Deputy Director (Education & Visitors), National Museums Liverpool
Claire has been a leading force in the field of how museums change lives. Over the past decade as Head of Community Partnerships and Deputy Director, Education and Visitors, at National Museums Liverpool Claire has developed and led several award winning wellbeing projects for the museums, heritage and arts sector.

Common Good 

Allan Grogan, Chair and Trustee, Dementia Together Wirral
Alan’s life for the past 12 months has been devoted to setting up what is now a registered charity called ‘Dementia Together Wirral’, He has led the volunteer group, identified individual expertise and experience and channelled this into different areas.

Stuart Carrington, Football Development Officer, Liverpool County Football Association
Stuart has worked tirelessly to secure funding, establish sustainable relationships, and develop inclusion programmes which alongside his open and honest communication strategies have changed the lives of many through football.


Lisa Dorrity, Senior School Improvement Officer, School Improvement Liverpool
As strategic lead for the Early Years, Lisa Dorrity is responsible for improving educational outcomes for all 0-5 year old children. Lisa has been instrumental in creating the vision for the Early Years Chartered Leader Programme leading to the highest number of Ofsted-rated outstanding early years provision in Liverpool ever seen. 


Janet Dunn, Chair of Trustees, Plaza Community Cinema
Janet’s unwavering commitment and passion has seen the revival of Plaza Community Cinema. Jan has committed 22 years of her life, even as a Wife, Mum and Grandmother she continued to drive the Plaza to better things, and under her leadership the Plaza is a beacon within the community.

Health Care

Mark Waterhouse, Service Manager, Sefton Council
Mark’s work with Sefton Council’s Integrated Reablement and Assessment Service has been key to developing a multi-agency collaboration that has delivered transformative support care for those with support needs across the Liverpool City Region.

Social Care

Jake Mills, Founder, Chasing the Stigma

Comedian and writer Jake Mills set up national mental health charity Chasing the Stigma in 2014, in response to his own battle with depression and suicide attempt in 2013. Working with a local software development consultancy, Jake has created the Hub of Hope app, making it easier to find help at the click of a button.

Uniformed Services

Mark Thomas, Group Manager, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service
Alongside Mark’s role, his voluntary work, leading initiatives to support mental wellbeing and partnering with mental health charity MIND, have earned him the title of Officer Lead in Mental Wellbeing. Mark also represents the service at the Cheshire and Merseyside Suicide Reduction Partnership.
