Your experience matters. Develop the knowledge and confidence to reflect on, understand and shape your professional practice.

A flexible degree for practitioners working in learning support roles across educational settings, from early years and schools to further and higher education. You will be taught and mentored by experts in your field, enabling you to build on your existing experience, develop your skill set and enhance your professional practice.

Every day, you support children and young people to learn, develop and thrive. Whether you work as a Teaching Assistant, Early Years practitioner, learning support worker or in a similar role, your experience is at the heart of this degree. You will build on your existing knowledge and experience, engage with current research and new ideas, critically reflect on professional practice, and develop evidence-informed approaches that can enhance the way you work. Designed to fit around your working life, this blended learning degree lets you engage with online materials at times that work for you, alongside evening face-to-face sessions. Throughout your degree, you will have dedicated support from tutors who are experts in their fields and understand the challenges of combining study with professional life.

You will explore learning and development, inclusion, Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND), neurodiversity, childhood and youth development, leadership and wellbeing, connecting your learning to real practice. Assessments allow you to explore your experience whilst connecting theory to practice. In your final year, you will be supported to complete a research project where you investigate a real question or challenge that matters to you and your practice and explore practical solutions.

We understand you may have been out of education for a while. That’s why we want to make sure you are supported to build your confidence and academic skills throughout the degree, with guidance carefully developed across Levels 4, 5 and 6. You’ll also learn how to use AI effectively and responsibly in ways that are relevant to your studies and professional practice. As you progress, you’ll have opportunities to specialise in areas that connect with your interests and work, including specialist pathways such as ‘Special Educational Needs and Disability and Inclusive Practice’ and ‘Early Years, Childhood and Youth’, with further pathways planned.

Careers

This degree is designed to help you build on the professional experience you already have and think about where you want to go next. Developing graduate-level knowledge, confidence and skills can support progression within your current setting or help you explore new opportunities across education, Early Years, learning support, inclusion and wellbeing. It will give you the tools, not just to develop your own practice but to support and develop the practice of others.

You may use your degree to seek greater responsibility, move into specialist or leadership roles, or explore areas such as SEND and inclusion, pastoral support, family support and wider education services. You’ll also develop valuable transferable skills in communication, critical thinking, research, problem-solving and using evidence to improve practice.

Graduation doesn’t have to be the end of your journey. The degree can provide a foundation for postgraduate study and professional training, including Master’s-level study and, subject to individual course entry requirements, routes towards careers such as teaching.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees for the 2026/27 academic year are £9,790 for full-time undergraduate courses.*

If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £9,790.

The tuition fees for the 2027/28 academic year will be £10,050 for full-time undergraduate courses.*

If you are a student from the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, your tuition fees will also be £10,050

The University reserves the right to increase Home and EU Undergraduate and PGCE tuition fees in line with any inflationary or other increase authorised by the Secretary of State for future years of study.

Home students (UK)

*Tuition fees are subject to inflation-linked increases in line with government policy. Updated fees will be confirmed in line with the maximum fee cap set by the Government or the Office for Students (OfS) for each academic year. This means your fee may increase for each academic year of study, but only up to the maximum amount permitted for that year.

Eligible UK students can apply to the Government for a tuition loan, which is paid direct to the University. This has a low interest-rate which is charged from the time the first part of the loan is paid to the University until you have repaid it.
