Mental Health and Well being
Mental health difficulties can beset students at any point during their time at university. The underlying causes vary from person to person and may not directly relate to their higher education experiences.
Nevertheless, the resulting impact of mental health difficulty can significantly inhibit a student’s ability to engage fully in university life, and in some cases, may place them at increased risk of harm.
What you can do to help
Be extra vigilant in relation to your students and encourage them to look out for each other. If you have any concerns about a particular student, check in with them and tentatively follow up on your concerns. Seek advice and assistance from Student Life if necessary, and notify us straight away where intervention/supportive action is required.
Encourage any students who are struggling with their mental wellbeing to attend a wellbeing appointment to access help and support. The sessions take place between 12-2pm, Monday to Friday, during term-time, via Zoom video call or telephone. Students should contact the Student Life Team to arrange an appointment.

Don’t delay
If you become concerned regarding the immediate welfare and/or mental wellbeing of a student, don’t hesitate to report your concerns straight away. This will ensure that the student receives help and support at the earliest possible opportunity.
How to raise a concern regarding a student’s welfare/wellbeing
As part of the University's duty of care to students, colleagues are reminded that in situations where a member of University staff becomes sufficiently concerned regarding the welfare and/or wellbeing of a student, those concerns should be notified to the Student Life Team as soon as possible.
