Life in the city

Life in the City Graphic Banner

Liverpool is proud to be one of the friendliest and safest cities in the country. And although the city is a relatively safe place to live and study, we recommend that you refresh yourself with this page to help ensure that you and your friends keep as safe as possible whilst having fun.

Merseyside Police has created several videos with important information for students on how to keep themselves safe.

Top tips for a safe night out

Plan your journey

Find out the address and postcode of where you are going in advance, and make sure you know the bus route you are taking. Be sure to keep some money back for a taxi at the end of the night. Stagecoach and Arriva have apps where you can track your bus, and plan journeys.

Have key numbers in your phone

Keep important contacts at hand such as your friends, police, and the campus security lodge.

Keep your phone charged up

Your phone is one of the most important things when exploring the city - make sure it is charged up to take pictures, call friends, and use maps if you need to.

Be aware of your surroundings

Going out into a new city is a great experience, but it is important to know where you are! Familiarise yourself online with the area you are going to be in. The Guide Liverpool has information about popular areas in the city, so you can browse before you leave to go out.

Drink responsibly

Know your limits - responsible drinking can make your night out more enjoyable and keep you safe. Take a look at the Freshers' week survival guide created by drinkaware.

You should also be vigilant around drink spiking.

  • Never leave your drink unattended, whether it’s alcoholic or not.
  • Don’t accept a drink from someone you don’t know.
  • Avoid drinking too much by sticking to the UK's low-risk drinking guidelines.
  • Stick together with friends, and look out for each other.

You can find further information about spiking on our How are you today? page.

Protect your valuables

Keep your valuable items close to you and make sure you don't leave anything unattended. Read some top tips for keeping your valuables safe created by Protectyourbubble.com.

Attract help if you need it

Bars and clubs in the city have procedures in place for if an issue does arise, such as the ‘Ask for Angela’ campaign. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Stay together

Sticking together as a group can help guarantee that you and your friends arrive home safely. Use the same routes and forms of transportation as the rest of your party if you can. If walking is required, it is best to stick to main roads and avoid dimly lit areas.

Safe taxi scheme

The safe taxi scheme is available to any residential student who is feeling unsafe and cannot pay for an emergency taxi home. To access the service, call 0151 298 2222 and quote ‘Liverpool Hope University Safe Taxi Scheme’ alongside your student ID number.

You will be contacted the next day by a member of the Student Life Team to check on your wellbeing and arrange a fare payment.
