What is sexual misconduct?
Sexual misconduct includes unwanted or unwelcome behaviour of a sexual nature. Examples include, but are not limited to:
- Sexual harassment
- Sexual assault
- Rape
- Sharing or creating sexual images without consent
- Pressuring someone into sexual activity
- Behaviour that violates personal boundaries or consent
What is harassment?
Harassment is unwanted behaviour or conduct related to sex, gender, or any protected characteristic, that creates a hostile, degrading, intimidating, humiliating, or offensive environment. It can be:
- Verbal
- Non-verbal
- Physical
- Online or digital

Free "Consent Matters" online course
All students are required to complete the online Consent Matters programme, which includes three short, engaging modules:
- Thinking About Consent
- Communication Skills and Relationships
- Looking Out for Others
The course is fully online and can be completed privately, at your own pace. We strongly recommend that you complete it as part of the registration process. The University will be monitoring participation and sending reminders to ensure all students complete this essential training.
How to enrol
1. Register on the Epigeum website (opens in a new window)
2. Use your University email address (your IDnumber@hope.ac.uk) to create your account
3. When prompted, enter the token code: c27ba499 in the "Token Code" field
4. You’ll receive an activation email. Click the link in the email to activate your account
(Check your junk/spam folder if you don’t see it. You can also request a resend.)
5. Log in using your University email and chosen password, navigate to the ‘My Courses’ tab and select Consent Matters
6. Begin with the first module and complete them in order (1–3) for the best experience. (On a mobile or tablet, turn your device to landscape mode for optimal display)
7. After each module, you can download a certificate of completion for your records. A final certificate will be available once all three modules are complete

- Rape
- Emotional, verbal, and physical abuse
While there are no graphic images, the course includes realistic, hypothetical scenarios to help explore the concepts of consent and its absence. - You can report an incident to the police at any time
- University staff can help you make a police report if you choose
- Call 999 if it is an emergency, or call 101 for a non-emergency
Other reporting options
- Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) - can offer forensic medical exams, support, counselling, and sexual health screenings. They can provide exams without police involvement, and can also help you consider your reporting options.
