Academic promotion process
We are keen to support academic development and progression within Liverpool Hope University. Progression itself is not automatic. Those interested have the opportunity to apply, at the time of the appropriate promotion exercise.
For the 23/24 period, whilst an academic promotions review is underway, the university will be running a promotion process for Professional Tutors.
Promotions processes open during 23/24 are:
Promotion to Senior Lecturer - Open Monday 18 March 2024 and Closes Friday 24 May 2024 by 12.00pm
Promotion to Senior Professional Tutor - Open Monday 18 March 2024 and Closes Friday 24 May 2024 by 12.00pm
For details on specific processes please select the relevant tab above.
Applications are considered by a selection committee, comprising senior members of the University, and recommendations are made to the Vice-Chancellor. The process is transparent, open and inclusive.
All campaigns will be widely advertised to allow candidates time to apply. Information and details of how to apply will be communicated via these webpages and the Hope Bulletin. Briefing sessions will also be held on:
Tuesday 9 April 2024 - 2.00pm to 3.00pm - Hope Park
Thursday 11 April 2024 - 9.15am to 10.15am - Creative Campus
Wednesday 17 April 2024 - 11.00am to 12.00pm - Hope Park
Thursday 18 April 2024 - 4.00pm to 5.00pm - Hope Park
Promotion Briefing Presentation
Any queries regarding academic promotion exercises should be addressed initially to Karen Jones, HR Recruitment Manager on 3379 or jonesk1@hope.ac.uk
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link and instructions provided on the "How to Apply" tab.
The links at the bottom of this page will direct you to the guidance notes, application form, academic CV template, and the role profiles for both a Professional Tutor and Senior Professional Tutor.
Colleagues are invited to submit applications for the post of Senior Professional Tutor. Applicants will be required to complete an application form which covers the following three sections:-
- Learning and Teaching
- Scholarship and Professional Practice
- Wider contribution to the mission of the University, School and subject team
Documents an applicant should submit are:
- An Application Form
- Academic CV (Optional)
The application form should be no longer than five pages and the font may be no smaller than point 12. Each section must not exceed the word count of 750 words. Applications submitted in any other format than the application form will not be considered. Please note that no appendices will be required from applicants nor considered by the panel. More information can be found in the guidance notes document under the section ‘Application Process’.
In addition to the application you can provide an academic CV, this is optional. This document captures only relatively recent information relating to research activity (including research supervision). It will act as a guide to the panel in coming to a view on ‘currency, duration and frequency’ of research.
Please note that candidates are not required to provide details of referees. Where the Panel is unable to come to a common mind, it may seek additional reports from one or more additional external experts. Through the submission of the application candidates are agreeing to this. The Panel will consider the advice of the external advice but will ultimately exercise its own judgement in determining the outcome of promotion cases. Where externals are to be approached there will be consultation with the candidate, although the Panel will take the final decision.
The closing date for applications will be Friday 24 May 2024 by 12.00pm and late applications will not be accepted.
Appointments will generally be effective from September 2024, there may be occasions where it is appropriate for an appointment to take effect from either an earlier, or later date. Should an essential criteria, such as Fellowship of Advance HE, be the only reason an individual is unsuccessful, the University has the right to offer promotion, but this would not be effective until conditions outlined in the outcome letter have been met. Typically, in cases such as this candidates will have a maximum of 12 months from the date of the outcome letter to achieve the required condition.
Colleagues who are considering submitting an application should consult their Head of School in advance. This is partly as a courtesy, but also because they will be able to offer general guidance about the application, especially about the category ‘wider contribution to the mission of the University, School and subject team’. They will also confirm who the appropriate person is within the Faculty who can provide more detailed advice about how to address (a) learning and teaching, and (b) scholarship and professional practice categories in the application process. Such prior notice and consultation will also make it easier for them to support applicants with a reference.

Promotion to Senior Professional Tutor - Guidance Document
Applications must be submitted electronically using the link and instructions provided on the "How to Apply" tab.
The links at the bottom of this page will direct you to the guidance notes, application form, academic CV template, and the role profiles for a Lecturer and a Senior Lecturer.
Colleagues are invited to submit applications for the post of Senior Lecturer. Applicants will be required to complete an application form which covers the following three sections:-
- Learning and Teaching
- Scholarship and Research
- Wider contribution to the mission of the University, School and subject team
Documents an applicant should submit are:
- An Application Form
- Academic CV
- Maximum of 2 copies of published work
The application form should be no longer than five pages and the font may be no smaller than point 12. Each section must not exceed the word count of 750 words. Applications submitted in any other format than the application form will not be considered. Please note that no appendices will be required from applicants nor considered by the panel. More information can be found in the guidance notes document under the section ‘Application Process’.
In addition to the application you are also asked to provide an academic CV. This document captures only relatively recent information relating to research activity (including research supervision). It will act as a guide to the panel in coming to a view on ‘currency, duration and frequency’ of research.
Two copies of published work, normally published after 1st January 2018 will be considered by the panel. These publications should be those that the candidate considers to be representative of their best work. Please note that research outputs other than monographs and articles in peer review journals etc. will be considered, for example, performances, electronic media, and exhibitions. Further information can be found in the guidance notes document under the section ‘Publications’.
Please note that candidates are not required to provide details of referees. Where the Panel is unable to come to a common mind on the quality of a research output, it may seek additional reports from one or more additional external experts. Through the submission of the application candidates are agreeing to this. The Panel will consider the advice of the external advice but will ultimately exercise its own judgement in determining the outcome of promotion cases. Where externals are to be approached there will be consultation with the candidate, although the Panel will take the final decision. This does not preclude the use of existing external advisors such as the University’s REF advisor for the relevant Unit of Assessment where such information already exists.
The panel may seek additional reports from one or more additional external experts in appropriate circumstances (e.g. if the initial external advice does not provide sufficient information). Through the submission of the application candidates are agreeing to this. The panel will consider the advice of the external advice but will ultimately exercise its own judgement in determining the outcome of the promotion cases.
The closing date for applications will be Friday 24 May 2024 by 12.00pm and late applications will not be accepted.
